![]() In the end, Ever learns that she was so wrapped up in herself, and Skinny, that she had closed herself off to the feelings of those around her. ![]() It is, however, interesting to learn how much of Ever’s issues – and her perception of her relationship with others – was misunderstood and brought about by Ever herself as opposed to coming from those around her. It needs to take place, of course, for Ever to move forward, but it has both a literalism and a dream sequence feel to it that makes it almost seem out of place in the context of the rest of the story. There is a scene towards the end of the book that is both cheesy and awkward where Ever finally stands up to “Skinny”. But the important question is: Who are you going to choose to be at the end?Įver herself is an interesting character full of self-loathing at times she definitely stands in her own way. by Donna Cooner (Author) 50 ratings Kindle 10.99 Read with Our Free App Hardcover 17.99 30 Used from 0.93 4 New from 9.50 Paperback 1.23 60 Used from 1.23 9 New from 6.00 Once again, Donna Cooner (Skinny, Can't Look Away) taps into the zeitgeist to bring us a searing story about online bullying and superficiality. Together, the two team up against scheming politicians, a brewing war, and their own feelings to save the Shi empire from itself. jade Fire Gold is told in two points of view: There’s Ahn, a peasant girl with secret and incredible power, and Altan, the lost prince of the Shi empire who wants nothing more than revenge for his slain family. The end result is a fairly basic fantasy novel that I unfortunately wasn’t all that impressed by. This Chinese-inspired fantasy story has all the hallmarks of the genre: A lost prince, a peasant girl who’s actually a noble, The Chosen One(TM), and magic as persecution. When I first heard about Jade Fire Gold by June CL Tan, I knew I wanted to read it. ![]() ![]() "FLASHMAN AND THE DRAGON" (1985) - Harry Flashman's experiences during the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) and Lord Elgin's March to Peking during the Second Opium War in 1860 are depicted in this 1985 novel.ģ. I just cannot even imagine dealing with all that formality. I am so exhausted by the courtship patterns of this time period. It is not a warm and fuzzy sisterly relationship by any means and in fact, their constant battling provides most of the drama in the book. The interactions between the sisters, particularly Catherine and Lydia, reminded me so much of Downton Abbey with Mary and Edith. It is by no means the bulk of the story but hints of it are sprinkled throughout with it becoming a more prominent feature in the second half. ![]() In regards to witchcraft, it is subtle in nature, and I felt very well portrayed.
